THE PODCAST
L.A Not So Confidential
THE PREMIER FORENSIC PSYCHOLOGY PODCAST.
New episodes every WEDNESDAY
L.A. Not So Confidential is a True Crime and Forensic Psychology podcast hosted by two Los Angeles - based psychologists currently working in the criminal justice field. Dr. Shiloh & Dr. Scott have a unique perspective on True Crime as residents of the center of the entertainment world and the birthplace of the Crime Noir genre.
"It’s like getting to overhear forensic psychologists chatting on their lunch break, with asides to explain the more technical terms.”
What kind of psychologists would we be if we didn't have a resource page?
Here you will find the cited works that assisted in our research.
165. Documentary Review: Last Call, When a Serial Killer Stalked Queer New York
This week the docs review the 4 part MAX documentary series "Last Call Killer: When a Serial Killer Stalked Queer New York”. A rare 100% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes has gotten this well produced series a great deal of exposure on a serial killer in early 1990's New York who systematically and brutally murdered a number of gay men. The documentary does a beautiful job lifting the victims lives out of a true crime narrative, while laying out the incompetence and indifference of the investigators at the time.
164. Prodigies of Darkness: Child Psychopaths
This week the docs unlock the enigma of criminal acts committed by children. We delve into disturbing examples of historical and recent cases of homicides committed by children with a thorough explanation of the complexities of nature versus nurture.
163. Vintage Case: The Rattlesnake Killer, Robert James
This month's vintage episode focuses on yet ANOTHER rattlesnake - themed killer, Robert James. Using his smooth southern charm, James left a trail of destruction from the heart of Alabama across the United States, conning and killing many of the women who had the misfortune of crossing his path. Insurance cons, murder, incest and rattlesnakes all play a role in the story of this cold and vicious killer.
162. Overprotected: Conservatorships, 5150s and Britney Spears (re-release)
On the heels of the release of Britney Spears' memoir, The Woman in Me, and finally getting to hear from her directly, we wanted to re-release this episode form 2021 to help better understand what conservatorships are and how they are supposed to work.
We cover California conservatorships and psychiatric holds (5150 WIC). Who can this happen to and is a mental health crisis the only path to conservatorship? What are the checks and balances? The docs dissect the timeline of Britney Spears' tragic saga after the 2021 release of the New York Times documentary, Framing Britney Spears.
161. Documentary Review: I love you Now Die
This week the docs review and discuss I Love You, Now Die: The Commonwealth vs. Michelle Carter, a two-part documentary that explores the controversial case of Michelle Carter, a teenager who was convicted in 2019 of involuntary manslaughter for encouraging her boyfriend to die by suicide through text messages.
160. Criminal Profiling & Investigative Psychology
In today’s episode, we explore the lore and research behind the ever-interesting tradecraft of Criminal Profiling. What it is, what it isn’t and why we are enthralled by it.
159. Vintage Case: The Life and Death of Ramon Novarro
For this month's vintage case, we look at another untimely death of one of Hollywood's earliest stars, Ramon Novarro. A Mexican immigrant, Novarro rose to stardom in the silent film era and then transitioned to talking films at a time when the audience was hungry for "Latin lovers" like Rudolph Valentino. His journey to megastardom was deceptively meteoric and required him to hide his sexuality due to the era and the strict studio system. His tragic death came at age 69, at the hands of Paul Ferguson; a murderer who went on to create a post-prison alternative history of the event.
158. Sexual Sadism
This week the doctors bring you an episode about a Paraphilic Disorder that is often linked with serial sexual offending and killers, Sexual Sadism. We define what it is- and isn't- and how dangerous individuals are when they have a combination of Sexual Sadism and other psychological diagnosis or phenomenon.
157. Documentary Review: The Thin Blue Line
This week the docs do a double-subject tackle of THE "OG" true crime documentary from 1988 AND the term "Thin Blue Line." The documentary guides the viewer through a truly mind-blowing miscarriage of justice in the Texas judicial system that put a spotlight on law enforcement, district attorneys and judges, leading to nation wide reform. We also start off with an extensive history of the term "thin blue line" and the associated problematic interpretations.
156. Fast & Furious: Road Rage
This week the docs explore the increasingly deadly phenomenon of Road Rage, formerly and less famously known as Highway Hostility. These moments of uncontrolled emotion often lead to criminal acts and the loss of innocent life. This episode goes heavy into the most recent research showing a startling increase in road rage around the world. And, of course, the docs end with a few valuable tips for decreasing the likelihood that you'll get caught in one of these dangerous dilemmas.
154. Delusional Parsitosis
The docs once again revisit another delusional disorder, Delusional Parasitosis. In this terrifying disorder, individuals believe that they are infested with parasites or other unidentified organisms despite no concrete evidence supporting this notion. There is controversy surrounding this condition and we explore all of it, and cover a criminal case linked to the disorder as well as film depictions and a celebrity’s journey with the condition.
153. Documentary Review: The Anthrax attacks
This week, Dr. Scott & Dr. Shiloh review the documentary, The Anthrax Attacks on Netflix. This domestic terrorism attack terrified the nation in an already scary time. The docs review & rate the documentary itself, as well as offer some potential psychological hypotheses for the offender.
152. Scared Straight: Reform Schools
In this week’s episode, “Scared Straight: Reform Schools”, the docs review the very concerning history of the way various states in the US have historically (and now currently) handled juveniles deemed “out of control.” From incarceration, to reform schools and now the trend of “wilderness camps,” young people are forced by into brutal environments by sketchy and poorly trained facilitators. From children of the average American family all the way to celebrities themselves, the experiences were rarely positive. For years ineffective interventions have move across the line from discipline into torture, leaving emotional scars that take years to heal.
151. Vintage Case: Baby Killer Erna Janoschek
This week, as promised in the past vintage episode, we discuss the story of Erna Janoschek. Erna was a teen in the late 1920's tasked with a very grown up job. We explore her family history, developmental background, and the stressors present in her life that led to her decision to take the life of a child within her care.
150. Domestic Terrorism
Thank you for allowing us to bring you 150 episodes of L.A. Not So Confidential!!
We have danced around this topic in many other episodes on mass casualty incidents and threat assessment, but today we are drilling down into this specific form of violence. We review the categories of domestic terrorism, cover the background of the offender in the Oklahoma City Bombing, and discuss where Misogynistic Extremism fits in to all of this.
149. Documentary Review: Menendez+Menudo, boys betrayed
This month we review the documentary that has opened up an old case for new considerations. Menendez + Menudo puts the Menendez brothers in the background as a brave sexual abuse survivor shares his story and seeks justice for himself and other members of Menudo, while possibly giving new legal hope to Erik & Lyle's life sentences. Available for streaming on Peacock.
148. Cop Love triangles
The docs FINALLY get around to doing an episode on love gone WAY wrong with cops in relationships and the love triangles end in murder. Are police relationships really that unique or do they parallel the issues that the civilian population face? Listen to the docs cover two wild cases, one from right here in the heart of Los Angeles.
147. Vintage case: The Blonde Rattlesnake
In 1933, Los Angeles had its own Bonnie & Clyde: a young, dynamic and attractive couple leaving a trail of terror through a crime spree that left victims traumatized and mutilated. Burmah White, "The Blonde Rattlesnake" was a luminous platinum blonde with hypnotic blue eyes... but was she actually the cackling psychopath that the media made her out to be? In this episode we cover her crime spree as a get away driver, the subsequent trial, as well as explore the underlying psychological and neurological factors that likely played a part.
146. Going postal: workplace violence
“Going Postal”, in slang terms has become synonymous with an anger management problem or, in real minimization over the years, a version of “flying off the handle.” The REAL story has much more grim origins. The docs cover the first such case in depth, and then discuss a long history of increasing work pressures, toxic work sites and how pushing workers to the edge can have dire consequences, as well as the government and workplace safety responses to this tragic phenomenon.
